いつの時代も、若い人の大半は、歳月の積み重ねによる効果を侮っている、と私は思う。継続は力であり、1年では達成できない事の多くは5年費やせば達成できる。10年もやれば相当な力になる。けれども、この事を意識できる10代～20代はそれほど多くは無い。いや、それなりに歳を取っていてさえ、こういう事を知らない人がいる。

　

　そのことを、いけないと私は言いたいわけではない；自分の適性を知るために試行錯誤しなければならないのが思春期だし、中学→高校→大学と、短いスパンで次々に居場所や進路を決めなければならないのだから、5年～10年という時間の射程距離で考えにくくなるのも無理は無い。

　

　しかし人生は長いし、その長い人生のなかには長いスパンで眺めなければ気付かないこと・達成しにくいことも沢山あると思う。長い時間を味方につけることの出来ない人間は、短時間のうちに達成できることにしか手が届かない。「タイミング」や「スピード」でチャンスを掴めるような事物には、そのような性質は有利だと思うけど、世の中の全てのachievementが「タイミング」と「スピード」で成立しているわけでもあるまい。三日坊主な人々・流行に流されるしか能のない人々は、この点で、人生にハンディを背負っていると私は思う。
